Augusta Place
I met these clients when they approached me to design new office space for their business. Just after we’d finished that, they called to say they’d bought a new house and were looking for a full design plan that pretty much called for the entire house to be gutted. This was a forever home for these clients, and they were not afraid to blow it up and make it exactly what they wanted with no concern for resale. Our eyes light up like shiny pennies when we hear that. We love making space feel very personal to our clients and we definitely got to do that here. If I had to label the style, I’d probably go with Modern Bohemian. Super eclectic yet restrained. Light and airy.
We did leave a few walls intact, but they were primarily around the secondary bedrooms. We blew the walls and ceiling off the primary suite, visually lifting the ceiling to the roof but leaving intact the prefab roof trusses. We opened the bathroom up to the bedroom, added a steam shower and Japanese soaking tub and wove the chevron patterned wood flooring installed in the bedroom into a river of river rock in the bath. A warm mix of white oak, raffia fronts on the cabinets and soft whites bring an airy relaxed feeling to this space.
We expanded the footprint of the kitchen into what was once the breakfast room, reconfigured the island to incorporate a dining banquette, added additional cabinets and brought all the cabinetry up to the ceiling. Our client wanted blue appliances. Finding the right combination of blue appliances proved impossible, so we purchased for function and then had these wrapped by a company that wraps cars. We hadn’t done that before, but finding solutions to design problems is what we are all about!
There were so many special places in this home but one of our favorites is the dance room we created in the former dining room. Our clients love to ballroom dance and our flooring subs did an amazing job of marrying in the intricate flooring pattern from the entry and kitchen/family room flooring with the sprung floor installed in the dance room.
If you’re ever questioning how personal to make your space, I can only tell you every time I walk into this home, the feeling of light, air and peace is amazing and fits these clients like a glove.
