Baby Doe Snowmass, CO

These are special clients. They were the very first people to hire me after I’d finished design school and although we were already friends, their trust in my skills at that time was a gift.

Our first project together was their home in the Los Angles area. We designed an addition for a large rec room/media room on the first floor and an expanded master suite on the second. In the years that followed, we updated various rooms. Year went by, businesses grew and suddenly our clients purchased a large ski in-ski out home in Snowmass, CO. The home was a spec home, came fully furnished and sat right at the edge of the national park with nothing beyond but acres and acres of aspen trees and nature. One thing the new house did not have was color. One thing my clients crave is color. Our brief was to incorporate their love of color and contemporary design into this mountain home without any major changes to walls, flooring or architectural elements.

I’m going to tell you that we pretty much gave our junior designer apoplexy when she looked at the color soaked design boards, but I knew that the house, with wide open spaces and acres of white venetian plaster walls and ceilings would be able to soak up the color without it feeling overwhelming. And it did.

Every project has a budget and with several key custom pieces selected we balanced out the budget by using carpet tiles to create custom colorful rugs for the ski locker hall, the breakfast room, dining room and upstairs hallway. We are a function first, solutions driven design firm. This house was all about entertaining and ski boots and carpet tiles that could be replaced if damaged or stained made total sense given how we’d chosen to allocate budget dollars. This is an amazing home for amazing people who love to host.

When you look at the photo of the primary bath with that fabulous black and white plaid tile and yellow draperies, I want you to image Ali’s and my faces when we were standing there during install discussing where to hang art and a bear wandered directly in front of the window. All we could think of was thank God we’d closed the stacking doors in the living room!
